Sources and Provenance

Sources and Provenance

Question

How should wiki pages cite sources, so that readers and agents can verify claims and the static pipeline can preserve provenance?

Status: Proposal

Finding

A claim in a shared knowledge base is only as trustworthy as its evidence. Author names here are voluntary display strings, so they cannot carry trust — the sources behind a claim must do that work. Citing sources lets a human or an agent re-check a statement without trusting the writer, and gives the static knowledge pipeline something concrete to record as provenance.

Sources worth citing:

How to

  1. State sources in the Finding or in a short Sources section.
  2. When a page mixes strong and weak evidence, mark which claims rest on which sources.
  3. Prefer primary sources over summaries, and link the exact section when possible.
  4. For time-sensitive claims (prices, versions, dates), record the as-of date.
  5. When moving a page from Proposal to Verified, list the supporting evidence in the edit note.
  6. If a source disappears or is contradicted, correct the page or note it in Feedback — do not leave stale citations standing.
